Girls raise the bar for a place in the Idols Top 10 - PHOTOS

Judging by the girls' performances in the second Top 16 Group Show, this year's Idols SA is going to be a firecracker show.

The eight girls who all have their eyes set on a place in the coveted Idols SA Top 10, had the judges raving like never before in this phase of the competition. But which of these vibrant, highly-talented singers will make it to the next round? It's up to South Africa to decide!

Idols fans have up to Monday, 23 September at 22:00 to cast their votes and on Tuesday night, during the live Results Show (at 19:30 on M-Net and Mzansi Magic), we will find out which three of the girls will see the end of their Idols dream.

Like the guys last week, the girls also performed Top 40 chart hits from South Africa’s top radio stations and once again Idols judges Randall Abrahams, Unathi Msengana and Gareth Cliff have no more sway over the result in this phase of the competition.

First up was CARLÉ VAN DEVENTER(30) from Centurion in Gauteng, who performed “Brave”, from Sara Bareilles, which was a big hit on 94.7 Highveld Stereo. “Hey, hey, Carlé, nice start!” Gareth told her. He said Carlé has a great ability to interact with the crowd.

“I love it!” he told her. Unathi said she felt bad for those contestants who didn’t get to start the show because now they have to be compared with Carlé’s performance. But Randall thought there was still “a glimmer of the wedding singer” in Carlé’s performance.

To vote for Carlé, SMS the number 11 to 37400. [R1.50 per text] or vote online via mobile or web at mnet.co.za/idolssa, for free. Fans can also vote on Mxit [25 moola]. Follow Carlé on Twitter @carlevand7

TAUNA COLLIER (26), the self-proclaimed “farmgirl-punk” from Morningstar in Cape Town, chose to interpret the boy band One Direction’s version of  “One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)”, off the 94.5 KFM chart in the Western Cape. Gareth said it looked like the girls would not be giving the guys any leeway this week.

“I can’t fault that performance,” he told Tauna. “You finally believe in yourself and that’s going to make South Africa vote for you,” Unathi told her. But Randall thought unfortunately Tauna’s many years of performing on the club circuit was evident.

“It was as though you were doing one of those ‘Best of Rock’ style shows,” he said. “I didn’t find it original at all.” To vote for Tauna, SMS the number 14 to 37400. Next up was TUMI LESENJANE (21) from Midrand, singing a hit from the East Coast Radio chart in KZN: Labrinth’s “Beneath Your Beautiful”. And the crowd in the State Theater chanting her name after her performance nearly had her tears. “I thought you were absolutely magical,” Gareth told her. “Everything we needed, right there. Well done.”

“What you just did on that stage was unbelievable,” Unathi agreed. She said it was Tumi’s best performance so far in the entire season. “A performance like that can only come from someone who is a great performer,” Randall said, and he added that it also doesn’t hurt that Tumi was absolutely gorgeous and radiant!

To vote for Tumi, SMS the number 15 to 37400. [R1.50 per text] or vote online via mobile or web at mnet.co.za/idolssa, for free. Fans can also vote on Mxit [25 moola]. Follow Tumi on Twitter @mizzt100

All the way from the Friendly City, Port Elizabeth, 21-year-old CHRISTINA WILLIAMS chose the track “Clown” from British neo-soul songstress Emeli Sandé, which reached Number 2 at her hometown station, Algoa FM.

“Wow. I have to acknowledge that I completely underestimated you. Vocally, that was exceptional,” Gareth said. “What are you ladies doing to us?” Unathi exclaimed. She thought that if the girls and guys had all performed together in the Top 16 and not separately, there might have been no boys in the Top 10 at all!

“At this stage I feel like I just want to go home,” Randall remarked jokingly. “Where the hell did you and Tumi come from?” To vote for Christina SMS the number 12 to 37400. AMY JONES (20) from Paarl in the Western Cape went with a Kaya FM hit by Alicia Keys, “Brand New Me”, to usher in a brand new her.

“You sang the song in a way that I hadn’t heard you sing this whole season, and that excited me,” Unathi told Amy. “And trust me, we’re not mad, because I love this brand new kind of you!” she added, quoting the song’s lyrics back to Amy. But Gareth thought “it was under the requirement” of what the judges expected after seeing all the other performances tonight.

And Randall thought Amy depended too much on the song’s chorus to carry her through, and didn’t focus enough on her phrasing and pitch in the rest of the song.

BUNNY MAJAJA (26) from Florida Glen in Johannesburg interpreted “Let Her Go” from the British singer-songwriter Passenger, which made it all the way to Number 1 on the 94.7 Highveld Stereo chart.

“We want more!” the audience chanted before the judges could even speak. “I’ve got to thank you for giving me a new insight to that song,” Gareth told Bunny.

“Your voice is unquestionably fantastic,” he said. Unathi said she was trying hard not to cry. “That was awe-inspiring,” she said. Randall said Bunny couldn’t help being a very sophisticated singer and he expressed the hope that the voters would not overlook that sophistication.

The youngest girl in the competition, the 19-year-old little firebrand ZOË ZANA from Bishop Lavis in Cape Town, selected an Algoa FM hit, “Lose To Win”, from a successful former American Idol, Fantasia. “That was very sexy, huh?”

Gareth exclaimed. “You’re like a mix of Pink and Missy Elliott!” he said. “None of the other performers in this competition has that much edge.”

Unathi said Zoë sang the lyrics like that had happened to her in her own life. Randall said he thought Zoë had done enough tonight to keep her in the competition, despite some stiff competition. To vote for Zoë SMS the number 16 to 37400. [R1.50 per text] or vote online via mobile or web at mnet.co.za/idolssa, for free. Fans can also vote on Mxit [25 moola]. Follow Zoë on Twitter @zoe_zana

Last but not least it was the turn of the Durban schoolteacher CRYSTALENE NAIR (24), who chose an upbeat hit with which to close out the evening: Selena Gomez’s “Come and Get It”, which charted on 94.5 KFM.

Gareth said that was an interesting choice of song for Crystalene, but that she lost focus a bit on the chorus. “I love the fact that you dared to do something different,” Unathi told her but she agreed that Crystalene lost focus in parts. “Tumi, Christina, Bunny and Crystalene – I think you’re going to be fine,” Randall declared to sum up the evening. To vote for Crystalene SMS the number 13 to 37400. [R1.50 per text] or vote online via mobile or web at mnet.co.za/idolssa, for free. Fans can also vote on Mxit [25 moola].
