Viewer complaint against Big Brother behaviour

May 18, 2012 | Reader Letter | 20 comments

COMMENT: 'As a viewer of the show Big Brother Africa, I am extremely dissatisfied with the conduct of the housemates in this show, and would like to lay a formal complaint'

I have noted an alarming level of women abuse on this show and it is continuously increasing.

Last weekend, I was appalled to see Kenyan celebrity housemate Prezzo heavily insulting Babalwa Mneno of South Africa. He hurled verbal abuse at her, insulted her about her sex life; culinary skills; and general worth as a woman. He degraded her in front of the whole of Africa, and the world.

Yet nothing was done about this incident. On the very same weekend, a female housemate in the Downville house was almost physically assaulted by SA housemate Keagan, when she continued talking during an announcement. Again, no action was taken from the side of the show’s organisers.

In Season 2 of BBA, Tanzanian housemate Richard sexually assaulted Ofunneka of Nigeria live on television. This incident was even reported on by the local media, yet the show did nothing to reprimand the offender. Instead, he went on to emerge as the winner of that season.

As Africans, we are against this abuse of women as well as gross violation of women’s rights on our television screens.

I implore you to conduct a thorough investigation with the aim to rectify the indecencies taking place on this show.

@ Sowetan. You have a really sick writter here to complain about Big Brother. Before the show all participants are briefed about the contents of the show and it is up to the applicants to withdraw if they do not like the conditions thereof.

I think the writter does not have alternative channels to watch like Animal Planet or Jika Majika.

The point being made by the writer is about abuse - and suggesting they use a remote control to change channel is missing the point. Changing channels does not mean the abuse will stop.

Similalry, signing up for Big Brother certainly does not amount to signing up for abuse. There are many conditions that participants understand - including the fact that you will no privacy at all. But BB also undertakes to ensure that there is no form of abuse that participants will be subjected to.

The writter is just lonely and seeking attention. This show is a crazy show. How many many were abused by Karen from Nigeria last season and why didnt this person complain then. This person is sexist and crazy.

"As Africans, we are against this abuse of women as well as gross violation of women’s rights on our television screens".

i am not too sure who this person is refering to because to start with abuse is irrelevant and subjective. what you see as abuse i see it as being competitive.

This author must observe a famous TV warning which goes ''The following program is not for children under the age of 18'' If adult stuff which is happening there is not appealing to you or you are sensitive to phonographic behavior leave that to the dogs like us we will explain to you later, any where where there is adult entertainment put me there!!

I will have to agree with the writer on this one. Women abuse on that show especially this season is so alarming to say the least. Prezzo and Mampi abuse Babalwa and Mampi respectivley. And the way they keep on swearing by women's private parts, really? the only guy who is being a gentleman is Roki.

Such behaviour truly has to be monitored as it make it seem right to abuse women.

I love the show still, very entertaining but at times verbal abuse is just too much.
