Great wall protects China

EDWARD Sekwala wants to know who built the Great Wall of China.

Historians believe the earliest wall was built under the rule of Emperor Qin, who was able to unify parts of China around 221 BCE.

Before that individual states had built their own wall defences, but Emperor Qin wanted to connect all the walls as a defence against northern invaders.

He ordered the building of the "Wan Li Chang Cheng", as it was known in China. Most of the original wall no longer exists.

Each dynasty worked on maintaining or adding to the wall.

The Ming dynasty (1368-1644) carried out a rebuilding project that extended the wall.

This project resulted in a wall that is 6000km long. -
