HELP has been pouring in for residents of an informal settlement after their shacks were ravaged by fire on Sunday.

The fire, which destroyed 50 shacks in Sondela Jabula informal settlement in Rustenburg, North West, killed two people and left more than 70 people homeless.

They are currently being housed in a community hall.

The affected residents were yesterday thankful for receiving blankets, food and mattresses.

North West premier Thandi Modise sent condolences to the bereaved families.

"As part of our multi-disciplinary task team, provincial government departments are already on the ground to support Rustenburg local municipality to deal with the disaster and compile an assessment report that will inform urgent, medium and long-term interventions," the premier said yesterday.

"We appeal to those whose lives have been disrupted by the disaster to exercise patience and cooperate with the team."

Many residents were left without identity documents after they were burnt in the fire and were still in the same clothes they were wearing when the fire broke out.

North West MEC for social development Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi visited the fire victims yesterday.

She said her department would assist the victims with groceries and counselling.
