TELEVISION actor Don Mlangeni-Nawa has been tasked by the Free State department of sport, arts, culture and recreation to create a musical for the coming African National Congress Centenary celebrations.

Known to television viewers as Zeb Matabane, Mlangeni-Nawa joins Mbongeni Ngema, who has also been tasked with producing a show called Number 43, which is about the ANC's safe house in Swaziland during the struggle.

Titled Unbreakable Thread, the musical opens in the Sand du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein on January 4 and will run until January 14.

"The play will open in Bloemfontein and we also plan to take it to other provinces as part of celebrations," Mlangeni-Nawa said.

The production is written by Regina Nawa and Tebogo Maboa and directed by Mlangeni-Nawa.

Unbreakable Threads uses drama and music to reflect historical experiences through movement.

"The show uses dance to showcase values of ubuntu with the ANC and its 100 years of existence as a case study," Mlangeni-Nawa said.

The cast of 60 takes one on the journey of the formation of the ANC since January 8 in 1912.

"The story is told through music, dance and dialogue. The thread we talk about is the spirit of ubuntu that South Africans had shown for centuries," he explained.

Mlangeni-Nawa said despite everything that people went through, when the Freedom Charter was launched in 1956 it still covered all the races.

"People never excluded the whites and Afrikaners who oppressed blacks in this country," he said.

"Though the country is currently experiencing democracy, the land is still dominated by the minority."

Mlangeni-Nawa added that the show features well-known actors such as Peter Mashigo and Mahlubi Kraai.

He said he decided to use fresh talent because he wanted to give young people a platform.
