Time for Miss Thembisa hopefuls

THE beauty pageant industry is growing faster than anticipated.

With young models keen to launch their careers, beauty pageants have become a platform to greater heights. Most of the pageants have come and gone, but Miss Thembisa is one of the pageants that are still going strong.

Started in 1999, Miss Thembisa will be hosting its finals on October 29 at an as yet unconfirmed venue. The winners will walk away with bursaries, laptops, learnerships and exposure to top modelling agencies.

Staged by the Siyaphumelela Youth Development Initiative (SYDI), the pageant has grown to become a platform for the East Rand youth.

Excecious Mathibela, of the SYDI, says when they started Miss Thembisa they wanted to produce successful models that can compete in the international arena. He said unlike others who want to make money for themselves, the SYDI has the interest of the models at heart.

"We have programmes that monitor their success. Since the inception of the pageant, we have produced candidates who are doing well on radio and television."

He says they have produced the likes of Zama Dlomo, who presents Blue Couch on SABC1.

"Take former Miss Thembisa 2003, Ayanda Kubheka, who worked for the Miss SA Pageant and now owns her own event company. We have also unearthed Pearl Modiadie, who is currently a presenter on e.tv and a Yfm DJ."
