Idols singer in bar brawl HERE'S THE PHOTOS

REGRETS: 'I'm sorry for my quick mouth and rocker mentality'

At the start of Idols Season 7, Freddie van Dango was amongst the front-runners to win the coveted prize. Since then, however, he has been on somewhat of a downward spiral.

Last week’s rendition of “Rehab” by the Late Amy Winehouse was definitely amongst his worst performances. Judge Gareth Cliff reckoned that something was missing, commenting “maybe you should have had your hair up in a beehive”. And Randall admonished that there is a fine line between capturing the song’s insouciance and not taking the song seriously. “Certainly not your best moment,” he chided.

Then the worst happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. The top eight Idols contestants were given Friday night off, to recuperate after they were attacked by a flu bug.

Van Dango was beaten up outside a bar in Greenside, Johannesburg, for his "quickmouth and a rocker mentality" after having a few drinks with friends.

During the brawl, Van Dango sustained several bruises as well as a broken cheekbone.

He had not fully recovered and bruises were pasted all over his face when he made a brave appearance on the Live Results Show on Tuesday night. But the TV show's make-up artists did a good job and the doctor declared him able to sing in further rounds.

He profusely apologised to fans, his family, M-Net and everyone at Idols for his unbecoming behaviour.

He admitted that the evening partying with his friends spiralled out of control and says he regrets the way in which it all ended.

On his Facebook posting, he stated that he does not condone violence of any kind and that he did not hit back at any stage.

"I can confirm that I did drink with my friends and even though I have a quick mouth and a rocker mentality, I do believe violence is utterly unacceptable in any situation. It's not a way to fix anything or to 'teach someone a lesson'. I never raised a fist or fought back and want to be very clear about this."

In Idols history, this is the first time such an unfortunate incident has happened.

M-Net has reprimanded Freddie and reminded the contestants of the way Idols are regarded as role models and the responsibilities and challenges that come with leading a life in the limelight.

Freddie did not press criminal charges and preferred to focus on his Idols performances and music career for now.

Meanwhile, M-Net has reiterated that the Idols will be accompanied by security whenever they make public appearances as a group.

  • This coming weekend at the Mosaiek Teatro, the show will be graced by a performance by international superstar James Blunt - before dashing to the Dome in Northgate for his live concert.

The Top 8 Idols will be accompanied by the Mzansi Choir.

The winner will walk away with a coveted prize of a million rand in the grand finale on October 4.
