Durban a hot location for hit TV series

IF YOU walk down a Durban street this week and see a sniper on top of a building near the City Hall, don't panic

The streets have been turned into a giant movie set for the shooting of the hit international television series, Strike Back 2.

The producers of the action-packed series said they chose the city to "cheat scenes" for Delhi, Kuala Lumpur and Pakistan.

Produced by local company Out of Africa Entertainment in conjunction with UK company Left Bank Pictures for the HBO channel, the series is a multi-million rand production.

Filming continues until Thursday.

The series is based on the novel by Chris Ryan, best-selling author and former soldier of the Special Air Service.

Deon du Preez of Out of Africa said: "The series features an organisation called Section 20, comprising a unit of highly skilled operatives who hunt deadly terrorists and defuse a plot which could potentially lead to war

"It's a fast pace, high action TV series and a great project to be filmed in South Africa."

The series first aired last year and according to the Broadcasters Audience Research Board more than 1million viewers tuned in.

"The centre of the city will be filmed as an Indian hotel under siege from international terrorists. Filming will take place from about 11am until midnight each day.

"Fake gunshots will be fired, some minor explosions will be heard, and in some of the scenes "snipers" will be seen on various surrounding rooftops," said Du Preez.

Durban Film Office chief executive Toni Monty said the city would be paid a location fee.

"Local artists and crew have been employed together with the crew taking up hotel accommodation, technical hire, construction and catering. In addition, there will be long-term benefits and spin-offs for the city that include local crew and film-makers being exposed to the international production environment. "
