'Banana republics' not so financially fruitful

SOLLY Seema would like to know the origin of the term "banana republic".

Banana republic refers to politically unstable countries that are dependent on one export (for example, bananas) and are ruled by a small, self-elected, wealthy and corrupt politico-economic elite.

The term especially referred to small countries, found particularly in Central America, whose economies were dominated by foreign companies. -
