‘US companies here to make a difference as well as increase revenue’

President Barack Obama’s Doing Business in Africa campaign will see “the largest US government-led trade mission to Africa in history” visiting the country this week.

According to the Embassy of the United States on Tuesday‚ more than 100 US companies — from 25 US states and across industry sectors – are here “to connect with opportunities throughout the continent”.

“Africa is on the forefront of an economic emergence that will shape the world’s business environment for years to come‚” said US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis Marcus Jadotte.

“The United States and the US business community see Africa as an important partner.”

The embassy statement suggested that the bottom line is not the only motivator for the delegation’s visit.

“Economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa is inviting for foreign companies‚ as it hosts six of the 10 fastest-growing economies in the world‚” the statement said‚ “but what draws US companies especially to Africa is the opportunity to make a difference as well as increase revenue.”

“American companies are innovative and produce quality goods and services‚ but what really separates most of them is a desire to make an impact‚” said US Regional Senior Commercial Officer Donald Nay‚ who works out of the US Consulate in Johannesburg.

“US companies leave behind trained workforces and improved infrastructure‚ among other benefits.

“The US commitment to corporate social responsibility is difficult to match in global business.”

The delegation are here from Wednesday to Friday.
