Teacher gets stabbed by co-workers over lessons

Mlawuli Lizo, a Grade 11 and Grade 12 economics teacher at Qaqamba High School in East London was allegedly stabbed, assaulted and beaten with a classroom chair by four of his colleagues in his classroom last week.

Pupils told Dispatch LIVE that the argument started over teaching periods.  A grade 11 pupil said that they had been writing an economics test. The test ended later than planned, then an English teacher came to tell Lizo that he should end the test as it had run into his teaching time.

The teacher and Lizo then argued.

The pupil ,who would like to remain unnamed, went on to further say that later on Lizo was marking exam papers with one pupil in attendance when four teachers, entered the classroom and demanded that the pupil leave.

The four teachers then allegedly locked the classroom door and assaulted Lizo.

Students alerted the school principal, Thomas Fesi, to what was happening.  Fesi struggled to get into the locked classroom and a pupil had to kick the door in.

Lizo was found covered in blood, there was blood on the floor and exam papers strewn everywhere.

Lizo was treated for stab wounds to the face and back of the head, among other injuries.

Fesi described the incident as an “embarrassment that should never have occurred … We are still trying to recover.”

Eastern Cape education spokesman Loyiso Pulumani, said the matter was reported to district director of education Sihle Mnguniand an investigation is underway.

East London police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana said four teachers from the school were arrested on Sunday following an investigation. “The arrests came after a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened by a 52-year-old teacher”.

Tana said those arrested were business studies teacher Zingisa Mahamba, 43; Xhosa teacher Kayise Njoloza, 49; English teacher Temba Mzamo, 54; and English teacher Tembinkosi Mamatu, 43.

The four accused appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where they were each released on R300 bail. The case was postponed to October 15 for further investigation.
