Mzimela wanted to quit SAA earlier

OUTGOING South African Airways chief executive Siza Mzimela wanted to resign a month ago, according to a source.

Sources at the parastatal said Mzimela took sick leave for a week when Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba refused to accept her resignation.

Public Enterprises spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete yesterday denied that Mzimela had tried to resign a month ago: "The first time we heard about the resignation was on Monday.

"SAA chairperson Vuyisile Kona held discussions with Mzimela to reassure her of the board's support. She was asked about wanting to resign," Tshwete said.

He said the timing of the resignation was unfortunate.

"It was not a good thing for the company, especially after the dramatic resignations of the board members last week. SAA needs operational stability," Tshwete said.
