Youngsters eye trip to São Paulo

MAKING dreams come true for aspirant soccer superstars is the inimitable trademark of South Africa's biggest talent search vehicle, the Sowetan-backed Dettol Shona Khona education through sport programme.

This weekend 12 lucky youths aged between 10 and 16 will be chosen out of 74 hopefuls from all over South Africa for what is sure to be a momentous week-long stay at the famous São Paulo FC Academy in Brazil at the end of the month.

The selection process is headed by South African soccer legends, John "Bull" Sibeko and Gardner Seale.

Sibeko and Seale - with their fellow development coaches - have been conducting the soccer coaching and life-skills clinics at more than 200 schools.

They have inspired more than 3000 boys and girls and imparted valuable skills to them.

They are due to be joined by former Bafana Bafana player Bradley Carnell, the project's inspirational ambassador, who recently retired from more than a decade of professional football in South Africa and Germany.

To be eligible schools had to collect Dettol soap wrappers. Individual candidates applied by sending their personal details and Dettol soap wrapper barcodes to a dedicated number via SMS.

Since 2006 Shona Khona has taken 60 boys and girls aged between 10 and 16 for advanced soccer coaching and life-skills training at the famous São Paulo FC Academy in Brazil.

The most successful among the candidates is Tyroane Sandows, who plays in one of São Paulo FC's junior teams.
