The 2018 Fifa World Cup will surely go down the history books as one of the most memorable. From Lionel Messi disappointing fans to Germany's shocking exit, perhaps the bizarre reactions we saw from Argentinian legend Diego Maradona made sense after all.

Giving us a list of things to talk about, this year’s edition boasted a number of firsts and interesting statistics, on and off the pitch.

The number of saves made by Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea during the four matches he played. Of the 40 goalkeepers, he had the lowest save score at 14.3%.

The number of Russian soccer fanatics DStv hosted for an Mzansi-style World Cup experience. Presenter Minnie Dlamini was tasked with finding the four Russians. One of them, Dmitry Pogosov, told DStv the experience was "as if the World Cup is back in South Africa”. “Our friends and family are so focused on what we’re doing here, and not what is happening in Russia, which gives it that exact feeling."

Daily Maverick reported this year’s tournament had nine goals scored in the 90th minute (excluding extra time), a feat no other World Cup has achieved.

The total of 88 825 tickets bought put them in first place although, ironically, the American side did not qualify. The Chinese team also did not qualify but fans bought 40 251 tickets, placing them in eighth spot.

Thanks to the World Cup, Russia saw a rise in sales of TV sets. Reuters reported there was an increase of up to 400%.

Soccer fans love their beer and, according to Mail Online, Moscow's pubs became concerned about the increase in alcohol consumption. One Russian barman, named only as Dmitry, told Mail Online soccer fans had consumed 800 litres of beer in three days at his pub.
