Johannesburg city manager Trevor Fowler announced that rules governing dress code during council meetings have been suspended.

“Rules to dress code are hereby suspended and referred to the rules committee once it is established‚” said Fowler.

He was presiding over the inaugural Joburg council meeting on Monday‚ during which new councillors will be sworn in‚ and a new mayor‚ speaker and chief whip elected.

The suspension would have been welcomed by the Economic Freedom Fighters councillors who arrived in their trademark red overalls and boots to attend the meeting. — TMG Digital
