SWIMMING is still banned along the Durban coastline as the annual sardine run entered its fourth week, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board said yesterday .

'The bathing status will remain the same until the sardines move away and I have no idea when that's going to be,' said operations head Mike Anderson-Reade.

'This is very unusual. This is the first time they have stayed for so long.'

Tourists didn't mind the ban because they were fascinated by the "greatest shoal on earth", he said.

Surfing competitions also had to be postponed because of the intense shark activity in the water.

'Yesterday especially... there were a lot of sharks.'

The Durban beachfront area, between South and Addington beach, was busy yesterday morning with people netting sardines.
