Child cancer activist plans 440km bike ride in 24 hours

A 21-year-old student is planning an endurance cycling challenge to raise awareness and funds for the Little Fighters Cancer Trust‚ a non profit organisation helping children.

Francois Naudé‚ an engineering student from Potchefstroom‚ will start the 24-Hour Challenge on October 5‚ just outside Hoedspruit. The ride comprises six segments‚ with a 15-minute break between these. The end of this one-man race across Mpumalanga will be Volksrust. He will need to maintain an average speed of 23-25 kilometres per hour to finish within the 24 hours.

“I am not worried about the distance‚ conditions or the time. I know I can do it. I have my mind set on it already. My biggest concern is that I really want to make a big splash for the Little Fighters Cancer Trust and highlight the incredible work they do for children with cancer‚” he said in a statement.

He will have a support team in close proximity‚ and a fully equipped support vehicle. Regular updates on Francois’s progress and conditions on the road will be provided to social media and mainstream media.

The Little Fighters Cancer Trust’s Mandie Erasmus asked the public to support the initiative. “As a small‚ underfunded but hugely active charity‚ with a no turn-away policy‚ we cannot thank Francois enough for his selfless and passionate efforts to raise both awareness‚ and funds for LFCT‚” she added.
