Young designer Pamela Ngubane is passionate about fashion

According to Pamela style is being able to wear whatever you want but there are just two rules that she feels young people should always adhere to.

Around 160 final year students from across Durban and surrounding areas entered the Young Designers Award which was showcased at the Vodacom Durban July.

The fashion competition formed part of the prestigious Vodacom Durban July Fashion Experience presented by Lipsy, London, aimed at showcasing the very best young emerging talent in KwaZulu Natal.

Out of 30 semi finalists only 10 were chosen to compete for the coveted award.

Pamela Ngubane from Kenvile Durban, who attends the Lindiwe Khuzwayo Academy of Fashion, was one of the finalists chosen by a panel of judges.

The 23-year-old final year design student entered her design after her lecturer informed her of the competition.

This year the design concepts were based on ‘The Big Screen’ with the underlying themes of Bollywood, Nollywood and Hollywood.

“As we know the theme is ‘The Big Screen’, so I got my inspiration for my design from Bollywood. I love everything Bolly”

Pamela decided to study design because fashion is her passion.

Her favourite designers are South Africa’s Gert Coetzee as well as the famous international designer Christian Dior.

According to Pamela style is being able to wear whatever you want but there are just two rules that she feels young people should always adhere to.

“Whatever style you choose to interpret, you must have respect for your body and a big fashion no no is wearing something and not being able to rock it.”

Pamela’s advice to all those who are thinking of studying fashion design is to do it for the love and passion because there are challenges.

“I have many sleepless nights in search of perfection but fashion is my passion. Its how I get to express myself, It’s my form of art.”

Pamela lost out to Sadie Bosworth from Durban University of Technology with a King Kong inspired design. The design incorporates the Johannesburg skyline. The prize is a R40 000 travel package to London, R10 000 from Gold Circle, A Nokia Lumia 1520 smartphone, R5000 gift card from Gateway Theatre of Shopping, a Lipsy London ladies fashion voucher to the value of R2000, a spa voucher worth R1500 and a full hair makeover valued at R1500. Second place received R3000, while the rest of the finalists received R2000 each.

“Winning the award would have proved that studying fashion was not in vein and that this is really what I was made to do”, said Pamela

With the full support of her family, Pamela has her eyes set on SA Fashion week and plans to grow further within the industry. “This is what I love, life goes on and I just have to work even harder and pray more until I get what I want.”

“I feel blessed; many wanted to be where I am, so I’m truly blessed.”
