Boys, take that last chance, says Baxter

Bafana Bafana will be without midfielders Andile Jali and Bongani Zungu in their World Cup qualifier against Senegal in Polokwane on November 10, but coach Stuart Baxter is urging the squad to soldier on.

To Baxter's credit, he was able to put together a winning team against Burkina Faso at the weekend despite missing some key players.

They included captain Thulani Hlatshwayo through injury and his defensive partners, Mulomowandau Mathoho (suspension) and Ramahlwe Mphahlele, who's also injured.

Bafana were full value for their 3-1 victory courtesy of goals from Percy Tau, Themba Zwane and Sibusiso Vilakazi.

The win, however, was marred by Zungu's red card for retaliating after being elbowed, and it later emerged that Jali will serve a one-match suspension for picking up another yellow card in the qualifiers.

Since both players put in a good shift against Burkina Faso, this is a blow for Baxter, but he appeared confident that he could replace the duo.

"We went into the game [against Burkina Faso] missing Dean Furman and Tower [Mathoho]. We were [also] missing Rama [Mphahlele] but I would like to think that the squad stands up for itself," Baxter said.

"If we can knock Senegal over here, we will take it to the wire. We will put pressure on everybody else. We are the ones now who can sneak in through the back door and they have the pressure on them. I'm going to tell the players, 'take that last chance'."

Baxter said the players deserve praise for their outstanding performance.

"These players have put up with some warranted criticism and some totally unwarranted criticism.

"So going into this game with a knife on your throat and playing that well deserves praise," he said.

Meanwhile, Baxter has appealed to the nation not to expect too much too soon from Saturday's man of the match Tau.

"Percy is a talented player and he's certainly going to grow. But I'm not going to put Percy on a pedestal on the back of one performance.

"He's a great lad, he wants to learn and I think he will get better."
