SuperSport United coach Stuart Baxter has vastly more experience in cup finals than his Orlando Pirates counterpart Kjell Jonevret‚ in the dugout at least‚ as the pair prepare to clash in the Nedbank Cup decider on Saturday.
Baxter will take charge in his eighth knockout final of his coaching career at Moses Mabhida Stadium‚ with the previous seven providing five wins and just two defeats.
The second of those losses was this season‚ though‚ when his side were beaten 2-1 by upstarts Cape Town City in the Telkom Knockout decider in December.
Before that‚ he also lost the Swedish Cup final in 2000 while in charge of AIK Stockholm as his team went down 2-1 on aggregate to Orgryte.
But aside from that it has been a tale of triumph for Baxter‚ including in the Nedbank Cup deciders in 2013 and 2016. He is now aiming to become the first coach in history to lift the trophy three times.
He also led former side Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 decider in 2014 when they beat Pirates 1-0‚ giving him a 100 percent record from two previous knockout deciders against the Buccaneers.
Jonevret played in a number of knockout deciders as a striker in his playing days‚ but has just two as a coach‚ and can take a 50 percent record from those.
The first was when he led Swedish side Djurgardens to the League and Cup ‘Double’ in that country in 2005‚ claiming a 2-0 win over Åtvidabergs FF in the decider.
He was also in charge of Norwegian club Molde when they played to a 2-2 draw with Aalesund in that country’s cup decider four years later Jonevret’s team lost the penalty shootout 5-4.
