Khune blow could end Chiefs' bid

Left with just one trophy to play for, Kaizer Chiefs' season could implode in the next few days, especially if goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune's doesn't recover from injury.

Chiefs were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by SuperSport United on Saturday, leaving them with only the Absa Premiership title to chase as they bid to avoid another trophyless season.

But Khune left FNB Stadium complaining of a hip strain at the weekend, and it was still unclear yesterday if the dependable 'keeper would recover in time for Chiefs' crunch league fixtures away to Cape Town City on Wednesday and SuperSport on Saturday.

Those two matches could all but end Amakhosi's title ambitions if they drop points, leaving Steve Komphela's men without a trophy for the second year running.

Adding to Chiefs' woes is the fact that aside from Khune, they have no other experienced 'keeper in their ranks, with Brilliant Khuzwayo out with a long-term injury.

Should Khune miss out, young Chiefs product, Bruce Bvuma, would have to step in and do the job in this week's big away games against fellow title challengers. Bvuma, 21, has been on the bench in the absence of Khuzwayo, who recently underwent surgery.

"It's disappointing that we had to go out in this manner," Chiefs coach Komphela said following the penalty shootout loss to SuperSport. "The sad part about the league championship is that you still have to rely on others dropping points.

"The cup was better off because you don't depend on others' results. Now we have tohope somebody drops points. We have to win our matches."
