Three matches, no win

Mamelodi Sundowns can attest that games in hand are not points in the bag after their goalless draw against Polokwane City here last night.

The Brazilians have shown some signs of struggle, especially in their recent league outings (1-0 loss to Cape Town City and goalless draw against Chippa United).

Sundowns have now gone three league games without a win, but remain among the chasing pack with Bidvest Wits top of the standings.

The draw in Pretoria was a true reflection of the match.

Sundowns had on their bench the reigning CAF coach of the year in Pitso Mosimane, while the visitors were guided by their general manager Bernard Molewa.

Molewa is serving as Rise and Shine's interim coach following Luc Eymael's resignation and subsequent signing with Bloemfontein Celtic.

The City defence was expected to crack at some point after regulars Tshepo Tema and Simphiwe Hlongwane were left on the bench, while fringe players Sibusiso Mbonani and Thabang Klaas started the match.

But, if anything, the changes didn't affect City's defence although there were times when Sundowns let themselves down with some poor finishing.

Forward Sibusiso Vilakazi had a chance to put Sundowns ahead after just seven minutes, but his tame effort was easily saved by George Chigova.

Percy Tau had Downs' second chance three minutes later, but put his header wide after a cross by Themba Zwane.

Moments later Sundowns could have been punished after Lucky Mohomi lost possession in the middle of the park but City's Rendani Ndou failed to hit the target with his shot going wide.

Vilakazi's forced substitution on the stroke of halftime and being replaced by Anthony Laffor summed up a disappointing half for the reigning PSL champions.
