Cape Town City might consider playing one or two of their Premier Soccer League matches at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit in the coming season and give a proper farewell to the locals after buying the Mpumalanga Black Aces franchise.

City are looking for a venue for four of their 15 home games in this coming season because of a clash of dates with the Cape Town Stadium‚ which will be their primary home venue.

New club owner John Comitis told a press conference last week he was “looking at alternatives” but this week hinted at going back to Mbombela.

“It might be a chance to say thanks to the Aces fans. It can’t be easy for them to see their club go‚” he said.

City are also speaking to Newlands Stadium officials‚ a development that could see football’s return to the rugby stadium for the first time since before the 2010 World Cup when Ajax Cape Town and Bafana Bafana occasionally used it.

The Cape Town Stadium is also being used by Ajax this coming season but has already been booked for several pop concerts‚ church events and other sporting events like the Cape Town leg of the rugby World Sevens tour in December.

Plans to move the Stormers rugby team and other Western Province rugby sides to the 55‚000-capacity venue are still on the cards and should they be added to the list of tenants‚ such a scenario would present even more of a scheduling dilemma.
