Many boxers are more than willing to fight for titles such as the WBA Pan African and WBF Africa belts, which are viewed by critics as meaningless because they don't advance careers of boxers.

But it was through such titles that a number of boxers like Noni Tenge and Cassius Baloyi got the attention of the IBF, which is one of the four most respected sanctioning bodies – others being the WBA, WBF and WBO.

Tenge, who reigned supreme as the WBF champ, challenged and dethroned Daniela Smith as the welterweight holder. Tenge's victory made her the first female boxer from SA to win a prestigious world title.

It was also through consistency as the IBO lightweight champ that Baloyi was given the approval by the IBF to face Manuel Medina.

Now, the spotlight is on Mapule "Thunder" Ngubane, who won the WBA Pan African middleweight belt at the Ridge Casino in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, on Sunday.

The national champion won the international belt with a flurry of well-executed body blows in the fourth round against Kenyan Charity Mujwiri.

That bout formed part of the fifth leg of Boxing SA's Rise of Women in Boxing Series.

"Look at me today," she said showing off her belt with pride. "I am the WBA Pan African champion. "I believe this title will open doors for me for bigger fights with good purse monies."

She credited BSA series for enabling her to fight twice already this year, defending her SA title and winning the international title. "Otherwise I would still be waiting to make a defence of the SA title," said Ngubane.

In the main bout, Matshidiso Mokebisi retained the SA junior-featherweight belt by a split points decision over 10 rounds against Monalisa Takane. The scores were 98-92 (twice) with one judge scoring it 96-94 for Takane.
