Jared Silverman does not call himself “Mr Hollywood” for nothing.

The actual Hollywood is the movie Mecca district in Los Angeles‚ California that attracts millions of tourists a year.

Silverman is one of the few charismatic boxers in the country currently. He always draws big crowds every time he fights. That has been the case since he made his professional debut in 2010 under trainer Nick Durandt. Silverman was 20 years old and was still doing his matric at that time.

His schoolmates packed Nasrec Arena‚ near Soweto‚ to its capacity. Sadly he lost that fight via a majority points decision to Oupa Maimane. Silverman came back more determined and won most of his boxing matches until he got involved in a gun shooting incident at Deep in the Woods musical festival at Meyers Farm in Alberton in 2014.

He was in a critical condition and had to undergo severe surgeries. He came back from the brink of death. He made a comeback in the boxing ring on Thursday night.

Silverman‚ now trained by Gert Strydom – who has had his own close shave with death‚ surviving by the skin of his teeth after being stabbed 12 times in the back and once in the neck in 2009 – promised fans a combustible performance against Vusi “Thunder” Bilankulu at Presley’s Night Club in Boksburg.

Silverman duly delivered to his promise. Bilankulu – whose corner was manned by Themba Zulu from KwaThema in Springs – tried to bulldoze his way in the second round but was made to eat leather.

Silverman was guilty of a deliberate head butt in the third round. Bilankulu retaliated in the fourth and experienced referee Tony Nyangiwe warned the two combatants‚ who gave as much as they received.

But the most telling blows were fired by Silverman‚ whose debilitating body shots sent Bilankulu sagging down like a bag of mealies in the beginning of the sixth and final round.

Silverman – out of gas and obviously ring rusty – let his opponent off the hook to eventually win by a unanimous points decision. All three judges scored the junior welterweight bout 58-55 confirming Silverman’s eighth win against two losses. A deafening roar of jubilation filled the arena.

“Like I said to you‚ the greatest glory is not in falling but rising every time we fall. I am a true testimony of God’s power and blessing‚” said a tearful Silverman.

“Thanks to everyone who wished me well during the hard and trying times and also thanks to all the people who came to watch the fight tonight.”

Their junior welterweight formed part of Real Steel/Unleashed Combat Sport Events’ development tournament.

Jade “Beirut Bomber” Karam finally won the Gauteng middleweight belt after Wynand Muller failed to come out of his corner in the sixth round.

Karam failed to win that belt against Bared van Rooyen in May last year. Van Rooyen relinquished it‚ and BSA pitted Karam against Mulder. The rest is history.
