South African striker Kermit Erasmus has completed a loan move to French Ligue 2 side Lens for the remainder of the season.

The former Orlando Pirates forward has been unable to break into the first team at top-flight Stade Rennes since arriving at the club 12 months ago, and will try his luck in the second-tier.

The loan deal does not, however, have an option to purchase at the end of the campaign, with Erasmus under contract at Rennes until June 2018.

There was also interest from Belgian title contenders Zulte-Waregem, but Erasmus has opted to stay in France.

The 26-year-old has not featured for Rennes since coming on at halftime in a 7-0 loss to Monaco in the French Cup in mid-December.

He has made two starts and seven sub appearances in all competitions this season.

Lens are currently second in Ligue 2, three points behind leaders Brest just past the halfway mark of the season.

Erasmus made his PSL debut as a 17-year-old for SuperSport United in the 2007/08 season before joining Dutch side Feyenoord the following campaign.

He had a season on loan at second-tier Excelsior Rotterdam where he scored 12 league goals, but returned to SuperSport the next season.

He joined Orlando Pirates in 2013 and helped the club to the African Champions League final, but after two-and-a-half seasons returned to Europe with Rennes in January 2016.

Erasmus has one goal in 11 international appearances for Bafana Bafana.
