Nascimento's injury paves way for Brimah at Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns' Brazilian defender Ricardo Nascimento will not be registered with the club for the new season, which paves the way for their new Ghanaian goalkeeper Razak Brimah to fill in the last foreign space.

Sundowns' announcement yesterday that they have signed free agent Brimah, 30, raised eyebrows because the club has a lot of foreign players in their squad and may not be able to register some of them for the 2017/18 campaign.

Sowetan established yesterday that Nascimento will be out for at least six months and will therefore not be registered.

PSL rules state that clubs may not have more than five foreign players contracted with it at any point in time.

So far Sundowns' foreign players are Nascimento, Yannick Zakri, Bangaly Soumahoro (both Ivory Coast), Leonardo Castro (Colombia), Fares Hachi (Algeria), Fiston Abdul Razak (Burundi), Mogakolodi Ngele (Botswana), Kudakwashe Mahachi and Cuthbert Malajila (both Zimbabwe).

The likes of Anthony Laffor (Liberia), Denis Onyango (Uganda), Kennedy Mweene (Zambia) and Khama Billiat (Zimbabwe) are registered as locals having been in SA for more than five years.

Nascimento arrived from Portugal's top-flight side Académica with a chronic pelvic injury when he joined Sundowns a year ago.

The 30-year-old soldiered on and played 30 matches, but Sundowns are now looking to sort out his injury for good.

Sundowns spokesman Thulani Thuswa refused to confirm the claims that Nascimento will not be registered, but insisted Brimah will have his space.

Brimah has joined his Sundowns teammates at a training camp in Rustenburg.

This means Sundowns will have Onyango, Mweene, Brimah and Thela Ngobeni in their goalkeeping department.

Ngobeni, who spent last season at Free State Stars, is expected to be loaned out again.
