Platinum Stars hold the honour of being one of two PSL clubs to beat Egyptian giants Al Ahly on South African soil in the CAF Champions League.

Few had given Stars a chance of beating the continent's most successful club, but they recorded one of their most memorable victories in April 2008, thanks to goals from Koketso Mmotong and Edward Williams in a 2-1 first leg victory. Stars went on to lose the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

Fact is, Al Ahly have not won in South Africa in the Champions League, having also lost 1-0 to SuperSport United in 2011.

The Egyptians held Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town to draws.

As Bidvest Wits prepare to host the Red Devils in the return leg of the first round in Milpark on Sunday (3.30pm), former Stars player Hareaipha "Simba" Marumo believes the Clever Boys are in a position to progress to the group stages.

Wits lost 1-0 in the first leg in Cairo last Saturday.

Marumo, who created both goals for Stars in their famous victory in 2008, says Al Ahly usually struggle to deal with speed, so Wits should use the pace of players such as Phakamani Mahlambi, Elias Pelembe and Gabadinho Mhango.

"You have to attack them with pace. You have to try as much as possible get behind their defence and to run them down. They tend to battle with altitude, so if you push you are likely to get joy. It's important that Wits take their chances.

"We believed we could win. Everything is doable, it's just determined by the mindset

"I think Wits have the better team," added Marumo.
