Tshwane braces itself for potentially explosive duel between fierce city rivals Sundowns‚ United

SuperSport United midfield anchor Reneilwe Letsholonyane says his team is determined to bounce back after their midweek season-opening defeat.

Coach Stuart Baxter's team slumped to an away 1-0 defeat to 10-men Platinum Stars on Wednesday evening despite dominating the match.

Letsholonyane and his new teammates will have an opportunity to make amends for their early season set-back when they visit Loftus Stadium in a potentially explosive MTN8 quarterfinal match against Tshwane rivals Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday. Kick off is at 3pm.

It will be Letsholonyane's first Tshwane derby after he joined SuperSport from Kaizer Chiefs in the off season and the mercurial midfielder is already eyeing his first chance of winning silverware with his new team.

“We played on Tuesday night and we now know what we should work on and once we polish those things we will be ready for Sundowns on Sunday‚” said Letsholonyane.

“It is important to bounce back‚ mostly because its a cup game and we are team that want to win stuff‚ everyone want to win things and we are no different.

“They’re a good team and they’ve been doing well. I think its gonna be a tough one‚ it’s a Tshwane derby.”

Letsholonyane is no stranger to winning silverware having won an avalanche of trophies during his Chiefs days and will hope to use his cup pedigree to inspire United to the semifinals.

Sundowns also lost in their last match as they went down 3-1 to Enyimba in the CAF Champions League on Tuesday evening.

It was a dead rubber against the Nigerians as the Brazillians had already been guaranteed of top spot in their group having won all their pool matches before the loss to Enyimba.

Midfielder Percy Tau said Sundowns will be eager to kick off their domestic season on a winning note. He knows that form goes out the window when it comes to cup competitions but cautioned his side to be alert against a forward attack consisting of clinical finishers in Jeremy Brockie and Thuso Phala.

“We’re expecting a lot of goals but then again we are also cautious‚ we don’t want to expose ourselves too much because we want to progress to the next stage. But I sense a good match‚” said Tau.

“Cup matches are different‚ they don’t depend so much on previous matches. But I know they will not want to lose two games so its going to be a very interesting game.”

United have no injury or suspension worries ahead of this match while Sundowns will be without the services of reliable defender Thabo Nthethe‚ who is ruled out of this match due to a suspension. TMG Digital
