Ajax Cape Town are expected to announce their withdrawal from the African Confederation Cup today because of concerns over their scheduled trip to Angola next week, officials said.

The frustrated club have been unable to obtain information about their domestic travel arrangements for their first round, first leg match against Sagrada Esperance in Dundo, which is some 1120km from the capital Luanda.

CAF rules state that internal travel is the responsibility of the host association, but repeated attempts by Ajax to find out how they will travel between Luanda and Dundo have produced no information.

They are concerned about insurance and player safety, but particularly the mode of transport they will be forced to use. Visiting teams do not have to take bus trips longer than 200km in CAF competitions and so it is likely Ajax will fly from Luanda to Dundo. But Ajax do not know on which airline they will travel or if their insurance will be voided.

At the weekend coach Roger de Sa said they had sent a flurry of e-mails but received unsatisfactory responses.

"All they told us was 'get yourselves to Luanda and we'll sort out the rest'.

"But we want to know more precise details than that," he said.

A withdrawal by Ajax will invoke an automatic three-year ban from pan-African competition.
