Bartlett will play every Tuks game as ‘a cup final’

Different season‚ same situation and another chance to prove himself as a coach in the top flight.

Two seasons after failing to avoid relegation as caretaker coach of Golden Arrows‚ Shaun Bartlett believes he has a better chance of saving his new club University of Pretoria than he did at his former team.

“I don’t think this one is as difficult as Golden Arrows. I am not even thinking about my time at Arrows‚” Bartlett said after his first match in charge of Tuks ended in a 2-0 defeat to Platinum Stars at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.

“You learn from your mistakes. For us right now it’s to make sure we gather points as quickly as possible. I took the job‚ I knew the risk and I knew exactly what was needed. My job for the next four months is to get the team as high as possible.

“Every game we will play is a cup final and I believe the players we have can do the job. We’ve got two more opportunities in the next five days. We’ve got Free State Stars on Wednesday and Pirates on Saturday.”

He seems pretty confident he can do a Houdini‚ but the road ahead is going to be difficult. Turning things around overnight for a club that concedes goals like they are giving away Christmas presents and only score goals as rarely as a leap year comes around is going to require tons of work from Bartlett. And time is not really on his side‚ with Tuks on 12 points after 16 matches.

“I only had one day with the team (before the Stars game)‚ but it’s about me making sure that I reinstall the confidence in the players and give them proper guidance as to how we can go up the table. It’s just a matter of applying yourself in the right way.

“We need to work on our organisation and we need to know what we need to do individually and as a team. Those are my responsibilities in terms of rectifying them. If we concede we make it difficult to come back into a game.”

Tuks‚ 15th on the table‚ will meet Ea Lla Koto at Tuks Stadium on Wednesday (7.30pm).

“It’s going to be difficult because they are also coming from a loss (against SuperSport United)‚” Bartlett said.
