Dreary derby looms as forwards fire blanks

Gone are the days when supporters would look forward to a Soweto derby because of the strikers they relied on for goals.

From Fani Madida, Jerry Sikhosana, Dennis Lota, Lesley Manyathela, Siyabonga Nomvethe to Knowledge Musona not too long ago, the Soweto giants have previously had strikers who just loved scoring in SA's biggest match.

But, ahead of the Orlando Pirates-Kaizer Chief game at FNB Stadium on Saturday (3.30pm), there's very little to be excited about when you look at the form of the current strikers.

So, just where will the goals come from in the Soweto derby this week ?

Amakhosi's top scoring strikers, Bernard Parker and Camaldine Abraw, have a paltry two league goals, while Kermit Erasmus is Bucs' top scorer with three.

"I think the strikers do not work on their finishing," said former Pirates striker Andries Sebola, who scored six goals against Amakhosi. "Finishing is their downfall. Positioning is their downfall. There's no composure.

"For us, scoring in the derby was big. We used to sit down as strikers and talk about Brian Baloyi [former Chiefs goalkeeper]. We would discuss his strengths and weaknesses. You need to prepare yourself."

Sebola said Amakhosi's struggles up front would be eased if they played with two men instead of one.

"Look at Chiefs, they only use Abraw. It makes it difficult for him to score."
