SuperSport have history of hitting opponents for six

Winning by ridiculous margins is something that has been part of SuperSport United's DNA.

Matsatsantsa a Pitori have long established themselves as the league's big hitters since their 8-1 demolition of Zulu Royals during the 2003/04 campaign and this still stands as the record for the biggest league win in the PSL era.

The closest the three-time league champions came to equal that recod was during the 2011/12 season with a 7-0 beatdown of Maritzburg United.

While the 6-1 annihilation of Orlando Pirates on Tuesday left the Buccaneers reeling from their heaviest league loss under the PSL banner, the margin was just one more in SuperSport's record of half-a-dozen winning scorelines.

It was just another occasion when SuperSport hit an opponent for six having previously staged a 6-0 mauling of Bush Bucks during the 2005/06 season and a 6-1 win over Free State Stars during the 2007/08 campaign.

All these figures justify why the Pretoria side also finished a number of campaigns with most goals scored since the inception of the PSL two decades ago, including the 51 they banged in during their successful title defence in 2010.

SuperSport also hold a record win by a SA side in the continental club competition courtesy of their 9-0 destruction of Red Star of the Seychelles in the second round of the 2005 CAF Confederation Cup.

While SuperSport's goal-scoring exploits are something that even the more esteemed local sides cannot reach, their neighbours Mamelodi Sundowns once handed Free State Stars a 7-1 drubbing during the 1997/98 campaign.

But what transpired in Mbombela on Tuesday night is bound to be viewed countless times on YouTube. Before that, Bucs' worst defeat was a 6-1 loss to Sundowns in 1990 in the now defunct BP Top 8.
