Tinkler looks for improvement from City ahead of Highlands Park clash

Cape Town City might be up among the early season frontrunners but there is still much to be fixed in the team’s play‚ says coach Eric Tinkler‚ even after winning their derby clash at the weekend.

“We played a game full of mistakes and offensively we did not punish our opponent when they made mistakes. I thought we were a bit fortunate in the first half. Ajax got behind us but luckily we got away with it‚” he said of their 1-0 win over their new neighbours on Friday night.

City headed to Johannesburg on Monday for their Tuesday night meeting with newly promoted Highlands Park in Tembisa‚ keeping up a relentless pace since last month’s kick off of the new season.

“It’s important for us to keep on a winning way. We started a bit passively and then we had a little dip but this league is all about collecting points. There is a lot of pressure on us to win our home games but we also want to do well on the road‚” Tinkler added.

The match against Highlands is the third in a seven day period for City.

“We’ve had to rest the players since Ajax and then see who is fit and available. You can see why it is important to have a 26-man squad. The substitutes are no longer there anymore just to make up the numbers.”

He hinted at as many as five changes for the match in Tembisa‚ where City will be seeking their first ever away win.
