Few can match the talkative Steve Komphela behind a microphone‚ and it’s no surprise that he hosted his own talk show in Turkey in 1993 — in Turkish‚ of all things.

His natural ability to work an audience as soon as he comes within 100m of a microphone is a sight to behold‚ and it’s no surprise that his interviews are always a goldmine for quote-seeking journalists.

He has his back against the wall at the moment as Chiefs prepare to face Cape Town City in their MTN8 quarterfinal at Capew Town Stadium on Friday night (8pm)‚ and those rapid-fire deliveries might not be enough to get him out of trouble if his lacklustre Amakhosi charges do not overcome their current slump urgently.

Below are some of the quotes that have kept journalists‚ fans and even players entertained:

1 — “We are the biggest toilet in the world. Whenever we want to relieve ourselves it is the easiest to get rid of the coach” — reflecting on the fickle nature of the coaching profession.

2 — “It is purely rubbish. And if you go through the rubbish then you will come out stinking. It is discouraging. You should check the records from our matches‚ you could swear it is deliberate and someone has got an agenda” — criticising the standard of refereeing in South African football.

3 – “I don’t know if I’m facing Barry Roux or Gerrie Nel; it is the same question but packaged differently. I’m not going to get excited about the question‚ but the response through excitement is misleading and I’m gonna say that” — when asked if he was one of the frontrunners for the Orlando Pirates job.

4 — “We didn’t play well‚ but we won‚ we now have to wait for the next team. We go on; we hope to improve from here. Statistics are like a bikini‚ they don’t reveal everything” — after an unconvincing win.

5 — “Already there are two ways in coaching – entrance and exit; hired and fired” — on the life of a coach. — TMG Digital
