Boxing SA is not taking the nonpayment of four fighters by East London boxing promoter Andile Sidinile lying down, warned chairman Muditambi Ravele yesterday.

Sidinile owes boxers - Xolisani "Nomeva" Ndongeni, Simpiwe "V12" Veteyeka, Luzuko Siyo and Nhlanhla Ngamntwini - purses for fights at Orient Theatre on April 22.

BSA gave Sidinile until May 21 to settle his debt.

But the ex-BSA board member and secretary of the Eastern Cape Boxing Promoters' Association has not done so.

"He requested an extension of July, and we hope that he does just that because boxers want their deserved purses," Ravele said.

"I can tell you that we are treating this matter very seriously ... We are as frustrated as those boxers, but I can assure you that we are handling this matter with the sensitivity it deserves."

The Boxing Act states purses must be deposited with BSA within 30 days or any date specified by BSA prior to the tournament.

"It is disappointing that Sidinile, who was so vocal when Siphatho Handi failed to pay purses for a tournament he staged last year, has done the similar thing.

"I learned yesterday [Wednesday] that the charge sheet has not been sent to him as was supposed to have happened this week.

"A date of July 6 had been set for him to appear before an independent disciplinary inquiry."

BSA allowed Sidinile to go ahead with his tournament because he presented a letter from the Eastern Cape Department of Sports, Arts and Culture stating the purses were to be paid by the government.

The letter, signed by a senior official, said he had secured R1-million.

The letter was an alleged forgery as that official was not at work at the time and the signature was not his.

Sidinile said he was not under any investigation .

"They are conducting an internal investigation because someone within the department signed the letter which was handed to me in an envelope. That has nothing to do with me because I never forged any signature."

He also said he knew nothing about the BSA charges.

"My communication with BSA is only in relation to the payment of fighters. I have assured BSA that I will sort that out before July 15."

Department head Mzolisi Matutu was not available for comment yesterday .
