Muhsin Ertugral’s experience counted in his favour and he has been brought to Orlando Pirates to bring back the silverware‚ the Buccaneers’ administrative officer Floyd Mbele said on Wednesday.

Mbele confirmed that Pirates’ head coach for the past season‚ Eric Tinkler‚ whose contract expires at the end of June‚ will meet Bucs chairman Irvin Khoza on July 4 to discuss his future at the club.

The Bucs official said Ertugral‚ who guided Mpumalanga Black Aces to an impressive fourth place in the PSL in the past season‚ has been brought in as Pirates’ new coach with a view to winning trophies.

The Soweto giants have won one trophy – the 2013-14 Nedbank Cup – since being crowned PSL champions in 2011-12.

“Absolutely‚ that was a factor in our thinking‚” Mbele said. “When Muhsin was with Kaizer Chiefs he won everything but the league title.

“Pirates are proud to have reached the [2013] Caf Champions League final and the [2015] Confederation Cup final. But even when we reached five cup finals in succession‚ and everyone was talking about that as a good statistic‚ we at the club were not in any way satisfied because it never transferred into trophies.

“This club is about winning silverware and this is what we will be expecting from Muhsin going forward.”

Ertugral is working as an analyst for Fifa at the current Euro 2016 European Championships in France‚ which conclude on July 10. He officially becomes Bucs coach on July 1.

Tinkler was an assistant to Roger de Sa at Pirates from 2012 to 2014‚ and then Vladimir Vermezovic from 2014 to 2015.

He guided Pirates to seventh place in the PSL last season. Bucs reached the Confed final in November‚ where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Tunisian club Etoile du Sahel‚ and the Nedbank Cup final in May‚ losing 3-2 to SuperSport United.

It is not clear whether the coach would accept an assistant coaching position again. He has been linked in recent weeks to a position at the Portuguese club he played for in the 1990s‚ Vitoria de Setubal.

Ertugral has won every cup trophy available in South Africa where he has coached Chiefs‚ Ajax Cape Town‚ Santos and Lamontville Golden Arrows. Glaringly‚ he is yet to win a league title.

Internationally he has coached Democratic Republic of Congo‚ SV Mattersburg in Austria‚ Ismaily in Egypt and Sivasspor in Turkey.

While not wanting to compare the two coaches‚ Mbele did say that Ertugral’s experience has been a big factor in Pirates hiring the German/Turk.

Tinkler‚ who had taken charge of Bucs briefly in a caretaker role twice‚ was filling the role of a head coach for the first time last season.

“Mushin has coached around the world‚ and the fact that he is so highly qualified‚ has such a wealth of experience‚ and has also acted as a Fifa analyst at major tournaments – these are all factors that influenced our decision in hiring him‚” Mbele said.

“His recent success at Aces did play a role in the decision. But we are also very aware that Muhsin is no one-season wonder by any stretch of the imagination.

“He has had success wherever he has coached. He is known for nurturing young talent. And he is a coach who commands respect from players.

“Muhsin does have great experience. But I don’t think it would be fair to compare the two coaches.

“Eric did very well taking the team to the Confed Cup final. But he was also only taking a head coaching role for the first time and it was his first full year as a full-time head coach of a club.”

Aces were sold by brothers George and Mario Morfou to former Ajax boss John Comitis after the past season‚ and will be relocated to Cape Town.

Comitis had publicly declared he was confident Ertugral would remain on‚ but Bucs have since swooped for the coach’s signature.
