Former Proteas opening batsman Alviro Petersen is the latest high-profile figure to be linked to the T20 match-fixing saga engulfing South African cricket.
Petersen, who plays for the Highveld Lions – the same team at which “intermediary” Gulam Bodi, who has been banned for 20 years (five suspended) by Cricket South Africa, ended his career – is one of five players from the franchise who are being investigated for considering Bodi’s approaches to fix parts of games during the RamSlam T20 Challenge, according to Wisden India.
There is also a Titans player under the microscope. Other Lions named are Thami Tsolekile and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
Wisden India reports that Petersen had a meeting with Bodi and a few Indian men who are behind the plot to fix the T20 Challenge, but had then reported everything to Cricket South Africa’s anti-corruption unit.
Normally CSA would sanction players who didn’t report any match-fixing approaches, but where does it leave Petersen, who first met with Bodi and the “fixers” and then went to CSA?
Wisden India’s sources state that the 35-year-old is not concerned about his future in the game, as he is considering asking the Lions for an extension to his contract – which means that he thinks he is unlikely to receive any ban. Petersen did not confirm or deny his involvement when approached by the cricket website, and CSA declined to comment.
While CSA have said that Bodi was unable to succeed with any of his fixing proposals and that none of the T20 Challenge games were affected, Wisden India reported that the clash between the Dolphins and the Lions on November 4 at Kingsmead was “a matter of hours away” from being influenced.
The Lions had a disappointing RamSlam T20 campaign, winning just four out of 10 league matches to end fifth on the log and out of the playoff positions.
But since then, despite having as many as five players under investigation, they have done well, emerging victorious in the One-Day Cup competition last Sunday against the Cape Cobras at Newlands and winning three out of five Sunfoil Series four-day games. – African News Agency
