Da Gama upbeat despite stop-start preparations

Owen da Gama is not stressing ahead of the second leg 2016 Rio Olympics qualifier against Zimbabwe despite not having a full squad yet.

The national under-23 coach has 15 players in camp and is expecting three more players to join the team today before they leave for Pietermaritzburg, the match venue.

The team will play the Zimbabweans at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday (8.15pm).

"Ajax will be releasing (Abbubaker) Mobara, (Riyaad) Norodien and Jodi February tomorrow (today).

"We are grateful to them because it's not easy for clubs to release players just when the season is about to start," Da Gama said yesterday.

"Wits will not be releasing (Phumlani) Ntshangase and Brondby won't release Lebogang Phiri," he said.

The South Africans were denied victory in the first leg a couple of weeks ago at Rufaro Stadium in Harare, when Zimbabwe scored a late penalty to secure a 1-1 draw.

Ahead of the second leg, Da Gama has warned that Zimbabwe are no pushovers.

"They like to sit back and then they come at you in the last 20 minutes," he said. "But we are at home and we have to make sure we dominate."

The under-23s will book a spot at the eight-team Championships in Senegal in November if they beat Zimbabwe.

Banyana Banyana, meanwhile, will be playing away in their second leg Olympic qualifier against Kenya at Machakos Stadium on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead there.
