The South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee warned yesterday that it recognised only Boxing SA and the SA National Amateur Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) as representatives of boxing's interests in the country.

The warning comes as a splinter group of alleged licensees continues to invite Sanabo affiliates to join a new body that will supposedly have its own amateur wing.

Sascoc chief executive Tubby Reddy said yesterday it had come to their attention that a group of people who do not want to be part of the official International Boxing Association (AIBA) and Sanabo entities were making plans that could have a major impact on the sport in the country.

The group are said to be planning to groom their own amateur boxers from grassroots level until they become professionals.

"Be advised that in terms of Sascoc's constitution and its membership criteria . Sanabo is the only regulatory body of amateur boxing in South Africa. It conducts all its boxing activities according to its constitution as well as AIBA statutes and bylaws," he said.

''The South African Boxing Act mandates BSA to recognise Sanabo as an independent body . Sanabo as a member of AIBA; admitted to membership according to article 9; is responsible for governing the sport of boxing in South Africa and according to article 8.2 AIBA shall admit only one national federation from each country.

''Any entity affiliated to a national federation cannot be affiliated to AIBA separately. Therefore all participants under the banner of Sanabo must note that Sascoc will not entertain any other body purporting to represent ... boxing in South Africa."

Reddy added that they were advising all provincial sports confederations and provincial departments of sport to take cognisance of AIBA's statutes and avoid being misled.

Sanabo president Andile Mofu labelled the group as ''people who are anti-Sanabo and also anti-AIBA while aligning themselves with the WBC".

''This does not worry us at all."

''Look, everybody has a constitutional right to belong where they want. But there is only one route regarding amateur boxing going into the Olympics in SA - Sanabo."

Mofu added: ''They think Sanabo is making money when Sanabo is instead spending money to develop boxers."

Sanabo is currently holding national amateur championships in Grahamstown.
