Chippa United intend taking their matches around the Eastern Cape this season and are negotiating with municipalities to make it a reality.

United moved to Port Elizabeth at the start of last season from Cape Town, and have been using the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium as their base.

The side drew decent crowds as the only team from the region.

The team is now looking to expand their support across the province.

The club is in negotiations to take matches to East London and Mthatha, where they hope the atmosphere will be less cosy for visiting teams because they will be able to fill the stadiums.

"The people of the Eastern Cape are passionate about football. We want to have no less than 7000 people at all our games, even against less attractive sides like Bidvest Wits.

"You don't get that many people against most teams. Even Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, for some matches, hardly get 5000," said owner Siviwe "Chippa" Mpengesi.

"We are exploring taking the team to other venues. We are speaking with the Buffalo City Municipality in East London and the Mthatha Municipality.

"The Eastern Cape is so big. Port Elizabeth is in the south, so we want to take the team to the people. Negotiations are still at an early stage, but we are hopeful that an agreement can be reached."

Mpengesi said a willingness to play a more expansive game this season and the capture of entertainers such as Mark Mayambela should see more support for the team on match days.
