Tuks try to box clever

Coach Sammy Troughton says AmaTuks are still hoping to make at least two more signings before the start of the season, but admits the scant resources at University of Pretoria are making it a tough task.

Former Bafana Bafana international Katlego Mphela started training with the club last month but left after two days, leaving Troughton scratching his head.

"I don't know the situation really, he came here and trained a bit . I'm not sure if he had another offer but he's no longer around," Troughton told Sowetan yesterday.

Mphela's representatives were not available for comment.

"There are one or two other trialists we are still discussing, but you know at Tuks we are limited, we don't have the resources of other teams, so we have to box a bit clever," the coach continued.

"I still think we will get a couple of signings in before the start of the season and even with what we have got now, I definitely think that we will have a decent squad.

"But I would be in a happier place if we had those signings in now."

Now that the transfer window is open, other clubs are able to make offers for players and that puts the AmaTuks management on edge as they try to hold on to their top stars.

But Troughton does not expect many more exits from the club, saying rumours linking his players with top clubs remain just that.

"There are one or two rumours going around, you know, a player reads that he is going to join Orlando Pirates . you have to try and keep these guys with their feet on the ground.

"But that is the role of the coach. If somebody comes in with an offer, we will consider it but there is nothing there right now."

Troughton is also happy with the way his pre-season is shaping up and said they were building towards a four-team tournament in Mbombela on July 28 that will also involve Mpumalanga Black Aces, Platinum Stars and Bidvest Wits.
