Cosmos on the rampage

Jomo Cosmos kept themselves in the race for promotion and made things a lot more interesting in the play-offs at Vaal University of Technology yesterday with an emphatic 4-1 win over a horrible Moroka Swallows side.

Halfway through the play-offs the three teams, that include Black Leopards, are on three points each. Ezenkosi are on the top of the table because of superior goal difference.

Jomo Sono's boys bounced back in fine style after a defeat to Leopards in their opening play-off match.

This was a well-attended game.

In fact the attendance here was far better than many Absa Premiership matches as fans watched the encounter through a fence and some sat on the roof to catch the action.

It was worth the trouble. They were treated to some fairly good football and goals galore, two of which were scored by Cosmos' top-scoring striker this season, Charlton Mashumba.

Mashumba opened the scoring after 26 minutes with a cool finish from close range after Swallows twice failed to clear the ball to safety.

After an impressive victory over Leopards, who featured a rare clean sheet, Swallows were back to their normal shaky selves in defence.

The visitors conceded the second goal four minutes before the break, and it was another soft goal.

Ezenkosi left-back Thabo Radebakeng's set-piece should have been cleared, but it went past every player in the box and into the net.

Cosmos kept Swallows' most dangerous player, Siyabonga Nomvethe, quiet in the first half. But you can't keep a good man down. Nomvethe pulled one back early in the second half - calmly slotting home after he was set up by captain Lucky Baloyi.

Swallows pushed more men forward in search of an equaliser and, to no surprise, Cosmos capitalised just before the hour mark as they put matters beyond doubt.

Mashumba netted his second goal of the day.

The host scored the fourth through Ivorian striker Brice Aka.

Ezenkosi next host Leopards on Wednesday and they will be looking to get another good win at home to boost their promotion chances.
