PSL rejects in Cosafa Cup reckoning

Two Premier Soccer League flops could return to South Africa after being included by Ghana in their proposed squad for the Cosafa Cup next week.

Goalkeeper Fatau Dauda, booted out by both Orlando Pirates and Chippa United, and striker Yakubu Mohammed, who managed just a single goal for Maritzburg United, are in the reckoning for selection.

Both have since returned home after a disappointing South African experience but have been included in the squad of home-based players for the Black Stars' guest appearance at the southern African championship in North West.

Pirates spent heavily on Dauda but he had made just three appearances for them in the 2013-2014 season. The Buccaneers then let him go to the Chilli Boyz but his contract was cancelled after one game.

Despite his lack of game time at club level, Dauda still went to the World Cup in Brazil with Ghana and played in one match. He was also cover at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea in January.

Dauda, now 30, is playing for Asantigold. Mohammed is also on their books.

He had his contract cancelled two seasons ago by the Team of Choice after arriving with a reputation as a goal plunderer but failing in the PSL.

Ghana begin their Cosafa Cup campaign on Monday against the winner of Group B, which will be decided tomorrow.
