Boxing event to help 'Pangaman'

Boxing great Norman "Pangaman" Sekgapane will be another recipient of the benevolence of associate promoters Rodney Berman and Jeff Ellis.

Berman and Ellis have promised to give the 67-year-old Sekgapane R20000 during their "Hurricane" box-and-dine tournament at Emperors Palace on April 13.

"Irrespective of how much we raise during the tournament, we will still give Norman R20000," said Berman, who together with Ellis, has come to the aid of many former top fighters who have hit lows in their lives.

The last person to receive financial assistance from them is former Transvaal middleweight champion Leo Simelane, who lost both his legs to diabetes a few years back. Berman and Ellis also donated R20000 to Simelane to buy prosthetic legs.

Veteran boxing writer Ron Jackson - who saw Sekgapane in action - described him as a brilliant fighter, a potential world champion.

Sekgapane, who was a professional boxer from 1970, failed to win the WBA title from Antonio Cervantes on August 26 1978.

The Colombian stopped him in the ninth round. Sekgapane retired in 1981 with a record of 51 wins, 21 of which came inside the distance. He had 15 losses and 2 draws. He lives in North West.

Ellis also announced that No 1 contender for the vacant SA junior welterweight title, Warren Joubert, and the third-rated Lungisani Jikani will headline the bill in a battle for that vacant title.
