Tinkler confident Pirates will prevail in Kampala

After flying blind in the first leg, Orlando Pirates need to study Uganda Revenue Authority SC carefully to protect a slender 2-1 advantage in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup first-round tie in Kampala, Bucs coach Eric Tinkler said.

AFTER flying blind in the first leg, Orlando Pirates need to study Uganda Revenue Authority SC carefully to protect a slender 2-1 advantage in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup first-round tie in Kampala, Bucs coach Eric Tinkler said.

Pirates had what seemed a safe 2-0 advantage until Happy Jele's 93rd-minute own goal in Saturday's first leg at Orlando Stadium. Now they face a tough away excursion protecting a single-goal lead and, crucially, having conceded an away goal.

Bucs had worked an advantage from beautifully struck goals by Rooi Mahamutsa in the fourth minute and substitute Lehlohonolo Majoro in the 85th.

"Obviously, we were very disappointed to concede the goal in the dying minutes. In my opinion, we were retaining possession very well at that stage," Tinkler said. "It was probably inexperience from Thabo Rakhale trying to play another pass, when in those moments at this level you should be looking to run the ball into the corner to burn time. Hopefully, he will learn from that because it led to a counter-attack.

"Yes, 2-1 is not the result we wanted. But now we have to go to Kampala and defend that result. It's vitally important we have the same mentality as URA had here. We can't be going there just looking to defend - we have to try and get a goal."

Tinkler believes Pirates can go to Uganda and get results.

URA's coach Alex Isabirye was satisfied with the result.

"We came with a game plan. If we had lost 2-0 it could have been more difficult for us to come back into the tie. But now we are at home and we will come up with a strategy [to] win without being scored against," Isabirye said.
