Bacela calls for urgency

LENNOX Bacela has called for Orlando Pirates to take charge of today's Nedbank Cup clash against second division side Tornado FC from the beginning to avoid a repeat of last season's round of 32 scare against Thanda Royal Zulu.

Then, the Buccaneers made a slow start and were duly punished by National First Division side Thanda, who went into the break leading 2-0 before Pirates came back to win the memorable tie via a penalty shootout.

Pirates are defending champions and are determined to win the trophy. The defence of their title begins at Orlando Stadium at 7.30pm.

"Obviously, as defending champions, all eyes will be on us to see how we play in this competition. The expectations are always high and we are ready," said Bacela.

"It's going to be difficult. We are playing against a team of youngsters who will be highly motivated. They want to impress, so it will be crucial for us to take charge of the game from the start and show them who the professionals are. We do not know much about them and I am sure they know everything about us. They have [Bucs legend] Jerry Sikhosana as their coach and would want to do well against us. But we are ready."

Bacela is likely to start tonight after scoring against Platinum Stars at the weekend.

Fans jeered the striker when he was sent to warm up, but he had the last laugh when he scored in the 90th minute after coming on for Sifiso Myeni to seal a 2-0 victory.

"People have their opinions, but we know what's going on at training. The fans are not with us on a daily basis. At the end of the day you are representing yourself and you know what it took for you to get there. You can't let it get to you. I was raised to be strong and I can take it."

Bacela believes Pirates will be stronger this year after a disappointing 2014.

"The break we had helped us a lot. We needed it just to get away from everything that happened [losing Senzo Meyiwa]. We got the team spirit back."
