Amajita soar to bring cup home

Amajita made history in Russia yesterday when they beat Finland 2-1 in a tightly contested Commonwealth Cup final in St Petersburg.

Goals by captain Motjeka Madisha and Pule Maraisane gave the SA national under-20s a win going to the CAF African Youth Championships, taking place in Senegal in March.

There was little to separate the two teams in the opening minutes but Amajita looked more comfortable against their taller opponents.

David Notoane's team took the lead in the 15th minute through Madisha after he rose above the static Finland defence to plant the ball into the back of the net from a corner kick.

Finland equalised in the 37th minute through Eero Tamminen.

South Africa, led by captain Madisha, were first out of the dressing room soon after resumption, looking really fired up.

It was the Finns, however, who forced two quick corner kicks in the 50th and 51st minutes but Madisha cleared on both occasions.

In the 56th minute, Siyanda Ngubo rounded off a number of defenders but was tackled when he was about to open fire as the two teams remained deadlocked at 1-1.

Caretaker coach Notoane then brought in Haashim Domingo in a bid to up the tempo. The move paid immediate dividends when Maraisane sealed the win for SA in the 77th minute.
