Boxing SA is incompetent: Promoter

Outspken boxing promoter Andile Sidinile has accused the sanctioning committee of Boxing SA (BSA) of being incompetent.

This came after the governing body gave him and another promoter, Mbulelo Mfama, permission to organise separate fights for the Eastern Cape heavyweight title.

As a result, two boxers - Sithembele August from Port Elizabeth and East London's Donovan Luff - have been crowned Eastern Cape heavyweight champions. Of interest is that both bouts were fought on December 12 but at different venues.

August stopped Unathi Jacobs in the fourth round in Mfama's tournament in Uitenhage, while Luff outpointed Vusumzi Mlindwa over 10 rounds in Sidinile's event in East London.

The ratings committee has placed Luff in the No.1 spot in the latest national ratings, while August is the No.2 contender for the SA title held by Anton Nel.

"You just have a series of problems with BSA. It is so embarrassing to even talk about these things now," said Sidinile yesterday.

"All what is happening there portrays us all as not knowing what we're doing, yet we have a few people in the board of BSA messing us up. We just cannot go on like this. It is unacceptable. Those guys are incompetent at BSA. Both boxers are right when they go around bragging that they are provincial champions.

"They fought and won their bouts for the provincial title."

BSA's manager in East London Phakamile Jacobs endorsed Luff as the champion. "Donovan Luff is the Eastern Cape provincial heavyweight champion.

"People who staged the fight between Sithembele August and Unathi Jacobs [Mfama] said nothing about a title fight when they communicated with me," Jacobs said yesterday.

Chairman of the ratings committee Peter Ngatane said: "Sidinile called me about this and I told him that I needed to find out exactly from Phakamile as to what happened because he is the provincial manager."
