Bidvest Wits have been told to postpone tomorrow night's Absa Premiership clash against Jomo Cosmos at Milpark Stadium because of the ongoing student protests at the university.

The football ground is situated on the university premises and the PSL are concerned over Wits students impacting on the fixture, even though it is a low-key game scheduled to kick off at 7.30pm.

"There is unrest at the moment and we have to be cognisant of the situation," said PSL spokesman Luxolo September yesterday.

Neither club are pleased with the decision, however, officials said last night.

Wits had been on alert over the vulnerability of staging the fixture from last week already, explained chief executive Jose Ferreira yesterday, but after Friday's presidential decision to suspend fee increases, did not expect protests to continue.

"Otherwise we would have sought to get an alternate venue but now it is too short notice," he said.

Students are going ahead with protest. They announced at the weekend and the university has cancelled classes and exams.

The PSL said an alternate date would be fixed soon but it could be played on the same weekend as the Telkom Knockout semifinals on November 7 or 8.
